Open-Source Licenses
Last updated: 30 October 2026
Draft. Highlighted details are still being confirmed; this page is not final.
Reellet is proprietary software. It is built with open-source components, each of which is licensed to you under its own license, not under the Reellet terms. Nothing in the Reellet Terms limits the rights these licenses give you. This page covers the macOS Apple Silicon build.
1. Libraries under the GNU Lesser General Public License
These libraries are dynamically linked and shipped as separate files in Reellet.app/Contents/Resources/vendor/libmpv/lib/. We use them without modifications to their source code.
- FFmpeg 8.1.1 — LGPL-3.0-or-later. Also the
ffmpegandffprobeprograms inContents/MacOS/. Source: ffmpeg-8.1.1.tar.xz - mpv (libmpv) 0.41.0 — LGPL-2.1-or-later. Source: mpv v0.41.0
- libplacebo 7.360.1 — LGPL-2.1-or-later. Source: code.videolan.org/videolan/libplacebo
- libbluray 1.4.1 — LGPL-2.1-or-later. Source: videolan.org/developers/libbluray
- libudfread 1.2.0 — LGPL-2.1-or-later. Source: code.videolan.org/videolan/libudfread
- GNU FriBidi 1.0.16 — LGPL-2.1-or-later. Source: github.com/fribidi/fribidi
- GLib 2.88.1 — LGPL-2.1-or-later. Source: download.gnome.org/sources/glib
- libintl (GNU gettext-runtime 1.0) — LGPL-2.1-or-later. Source: ftp.gnu.org/gnu/gettext
- uchardet 0.0.8 — used under MPL-1.1. Source: freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/uchardet
FFmpeg is configured without GPL or non-free parts (--disable-gpl --disable-nonfree --enable-version3); the full configuration is printed by ffmpeg -buildconf. mpv is built with -Dgpl=false -Dlibmpv=true.
2. Replacing a library
You may modify any library above and use Reellet with your version. Build it from the corresponding source, put the resulting .dylib under the same file name in Reellet.app/Contents/Resources/vendor/libmpv/lib/, then re-sign the application so macOS accepts the changed bundle:
codesign --force --deep --sign - /Applications/Reellet.app
The Reellet terms allow you to reverse-engineer Reellet to the extent needed to debug such modifications. We do not provide support for an installation with replaced libraries, and automatic updates restore the original files.
3. yt-dlp and Deno
Reellet runs yt-dlp 2026.09.16.232951 (The Unlicense) as a separate program from Contents/Resources/binaries/yt-dlp/. It is the official PyInstaller build and includes Python (PSF-2.0) and other packages, among them mutagen under the GNU GPL version 2 or later. Their notices are in _internal/THIRD_PARTY_LICENSES.txt inside that folder. Source: yt-dlp release, mutagen.
Deno 2.9.2 (MIT), shipped in Contents/MacOS/, is used by yt-dlp. Source: Deno v2.9.2.
4. Source code on request
For at least three years after we last distribute a release, we will provide the complete corresponding source code of the LGPL and GPL components in that release, at no charge beyond the cost of delivery. Ask through our contact page and name the Reellet version.
5. Other components
Reellet also includes components under permissive licenses (MIT, BSD, Apache-2.0, ISC, Zlib, the FreeType License, libpng, IJG and others) and under the Mozilla Public License 2.0: among them dav1d, libass, HarfBuzz, FreeType, fontconfig, libjpeg-turbo, libpng, Little CMS, LuaJIT, MuJS, PCRE2, zimg, OpenSSL, shaderc, the Vulkan loader, and the Rust crates and JavaScript packages compiled into the application. This software is based in part on the work of the Independent JPEG Group.
